The City of Roswell, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta and the state’s eighth-largest city, is home to almost 95,000 residents and boasts a beautiful historic district, more than 900 acres of parklands and more. Digital municipal and administrative services are a pillar of Roswell’s community, enabling residents to take on-the-go advantage of everything from crime reporting, emergency response and public safety apps to parks and recreation applications, mobile utility billing and beyond.
To support residents’ next-generation capabilities and provide heightened network performance, bandwidth, speed, redundancy and security, Roswell once again chose FiberLight to design and deploy an additional dark fiber ring. Having served as a dark fiber provider for elements of the community’s network since 2006, the city turned to FiberLight due to the company’s familiarity with the area’s network, history of ongoing support and close partnership, and ability to provide the ideal network solution with its presence in an adjacent data center.

Digital Service Compounds Slowed Network Access and Performance
As demands on the city’s network grew parallel to its range of digital service offerings, the City of Roswell found that it needed to augment its fiber infrastructure and quickly deploy a network that would enable real-time and truly always-on user access. The city required a network that would empower geographic redundancy and failover capabilities, allowing critical data across the many city departments to be backed up at an additional data center location aside from the city’s primary on-premises facility.
Over time, the Roswell community has adopted and integrated an increasingly sophisticated digital environment, leading to growing network requirements as users interact with and employ a growing repertoire of mobile capabilities. Subsequently, Roswell found itself in need of greater storage capability, better connectivity to its server environment and overall augmented network performance to support its various mission-critical requirements.

Dark Fiber Strategy on an Urgent Timeline Delivers
Roswell determined that it urgently needed a dark fiber strategy that would enable it to leverage high-capacity connections to a geographically advantageous data center on a short timeline. The city already had sites with access to a dark fiber ring. However, the future of application efficacy for the locale depended on quickly establishing a powerful but simplified infrastructure environment capable of supporting the increasingly complex needs of municipal departments, applications, services and associated data with scalability, security and optimized performance.
Offering operational autonomy, efficiency and control
To quickly augment the dark fiber network and build out capacity, FiberLight, with help from SereneIT, a next-generation engineering IT firm, established a 400GB bandwidth connection to the adjacent Ascent, LLC data center facility near Atlanta—an environment offering operational autonomy, efficiency and control with future-proof scalability and security. Roswell brought in SereneIT, a previous IT consultant for the city, to solve the requirement of finding a secure and robust data center partner that could meet the city’s aforementioned challenges.
